What is considered traveling by the NBA?
The NBA defines traveling as a player taking more than two steps without dribbling the ball. The official definition is “when any part of the player’s body touches the floor or if there is an opportunity to possess the ball, he shall be granted possession.” There are several instances in which this rule can come into play:
- When a player dribbles and then stops while his foot is on the ground, he must take at least one step before he can begin moving again.
- A player can’t take any steps after having stopped his dribble in order to avoid being called for traveling. If you stop your dribble and then continue walking forward off of it, you’ll be called for traveling regardless of whether or not you were able to bring yourself back under control before getting too far out of bounds or into another person’s space.
- A player who has established a pivot foot must touch that pivot foot with every step taken after receiving possession from an opponent (including when passing).
- It is also possible to be called for traveling when dribbling, but this happens very rarely. Usually there will be another player in the way.
The definition of traveling varies from league to league, but by the NBA’s standards it is when a player moves his pivot foot without dribbling, or steps once he has dribbled and then picks up his pivot foot again.
